From March 6th to 7th, the first Pet Food Seminar of MIAVIT Spain took place in Zaragoza. Almost all Spanish pet food manufactures took part in the event.

With the theme “healthy animals through optimal nutrition” the Spanish customers were offered a varied program. The evening before, a joint dinner – in the typical Spanish manner at a late hour – was started in a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. The next day, Roger Sabata Ramisa from Bioiberica started the seminar with his talk on health solutions for degenerative musculo-skeletal disorders in dogs. Jan Lippe (MIAVIT) presented under the title “The Art of Analysis” the importance of the correct execution of the sampling and the calibration of the measuring instruments. Subsequently, Anna Hollen beck from JRS reported on the importance and the diverse applications of fibers in both wet and dry food products for dogs and cats. This was followed by a lecture of Friederike Becker (MIAVIT) on the risks of self-cooked meals for pets and the resulting opportunities for the pet food industry. Jakob Rusek, adviser to the European Pet Food Industry Association, gave a general overview of the association and spoke on current EU legislation on feed additives. The event was rounded off by an overview of Dr. Ing. Roberto Elices Mínguez, Professor of Animal Nutrition at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the University of Madrid, on cereal and gluten-free diets.

The event was very well received by the participants – especially since this type of seminar has been unique in the Spanish pet food industry so far – so there is a great need for future revisions.
