From 3rd to 5th September MIAVIT organized its second international Poultry seminar at its headquarters in Essen (Oldb.)- Germany. The main topic of the seminar was antibiotic reduction in poultry production. More than 17 participants from 14 different countries took the chance to attend the seminar and to exchange and learn from MIAVIT poultry experts, but also from externals speakers. To keep the seminar as practical as possible, MIAVIT also organized besides the technical presentations two excursions.
Dr. Alfons Heseker, Head of scientific department at MIAVIT, emphasized in his opening speech, that participants of nearly all parts of the world – from Saudi Arabia, Kenya, Russia, Malaysia and ten other nationalities followed MIAVIT’s invitation and that all of them should take the unique chance to exchange and to learn from each other.
The first technical presentation was held by Prof. Dr. Nicole Kemper from the Institute for Animal hygiene, Animal welfare and Farm animal behavior at the University of veterinary medicine Hannover. She focused on different topics on how feeding and management of poultry can help to reduce the prevalence of antibiotic resistant bacteria. She emphasized clearly that animal production is only a small wheel in a whole system and that it is important to use antibiotics even more responsible in human medicine.
Dr. Franziska Kloska, Veterinarian at MIAVIT’s Poultry department, informed in a very practical and hands on presentation how hygiene measures can be implemented in the daily routine of poultry production. With many pictures from the field, she produced an inspiring discussion between the participants and generated an exchange from which all participants could profit.
All around practical broiler nutrition was the presentation of Djanet kleine Holthaus, Engineer in animal production at the MIAVIT Poultry department. She introduced especially a trial which was performed by MIAVIT with 400.000 broilers where conventional growth promotors (feed antibiotics) have been replaced with alternative feed additives like pro- and prebiotics. It could be shown that both groups – conventional growth promotors and alternative feed additives- performed on the same level.
On September 6th the guests had the chance to inform themselves about different activity fields of MIAVIT. This event was organized as a “speeddating” where the participants could attend for 20 Minutes at each of four different stations, to get a practical insight on different work priorities at MIAVIT.
Maria Twehues informed about analytical possibilities to detect the presence of mycotoxins in raw materials and final poultry feed. The participants get the chance to evaluate different raw materials optically, to then confirm via analytics if they are contaminated with mycotoxins or not.
As MIAVIT is one of the largest producers for liquid complementary feeds (e.g. liquid vitamin mixtures which are applied in drinking water for poultry) Dr. Jan Lippe and Thomas Sieverding informed via informative experiments, how MIAVIT liquids are produced and developed. They also highlighted the technical possibilities to mix critical substances and to analyze active substances in Liquids.
Dr. Franziska Kloska demonstrated how to use a MIAVIT liquid in practice and its impact on the pH Value of water with different dosages.
Djanet kleine Holthaus explained the complexity of premix formulation and production. It was shown that detailed knowledge about the more than 1.000 raw materials is needed. Many of the vitamins and minerals which are used day by day in premix production are very reactive and can only be used together when the right carrier substance is chosen.
The whole event was completed with two excursions. The first visit was to a processing plant for organic chicken meat. Here the guests had the chance to get an insight on the German and European organic poultry market and could see during a plant visit the exact working procedure of a modern processing plant.
The second visit was destined to a veterinary laboratory. Here it was demonstrated which possibilities exist in Germany to uncover antibiotic resistances and how to identify different pathogens clearly.
During joint lunches and dinners, all participants had the possibilities to know each other better and to learn and exchange experiences.
